We have a kindergarten boy in the family and he loves building things and making things. His Christmas gifts included a lot of hands on activities and plenty of Lego’s.

Brayden loves to build, take apart and rebuild the Lego sets he already has, but the addition of several new pieces have already brought hours and hours of time spent in detailed assembly work.

As much as it seems we’re living in Legoland, we’re excited by his passion and interest, knowing it’s reflective of his strong spatial skills. Building these colorful three- dimensional puzzles is also a powerful way to focus his boundless creative energy. Creative kids can often struggle to sit still and focus on classroom work and are at risk of being wrongly labeled as having ADD (attention deficit disorder). But when you see your active child hard at work and able to focus on intricate, detailed things that interest them, it’s a good indicator that there may be other explanations for their restlessness in the classroom.

A few short months ago, Brayden needed a lot of help assembling prepackaged Lego sets. But we spent some time teaching him how to organize the pieces visually and follow the pictures in the directions (the directions in Lego sets are great and all VERY visual!), Brayden is now able to work very independently. In fact we were quite impressed with the complex pieces he was able to build by following the directions on his own.
