HBO Documentary: Rethinking Dyslexia
There is a truly powerful must see documentary being released by HBO, “The Big Picture: Rethinking Dyslexia.” This documentary is a must see for parents and educators. It’s really a must see for all of us because understanding dyslexia allows us to value and utilize the strengths of people with dyslexia, instead of seeing it as a disability.
There are increasing numbers of children with dyslexia but unfortunately many go through school misunderstood, misdiagnosed and performing below their potential. Often, this leads to low self-esteem. As mentioned in my book, Being Visual, people with dyslexia are often highly creative, intelligent, visual-spatial thinkers that see the big picture, think outside the box and find multiple solutions to a problem. Helping these visual kids be more successful in the classroom allows them to develop and use their brilliant minds effectively. It also helps them appreciate themselves and their unique gifts.
“The Big Picture: Rethinking Dyslexia” uses great visuals to help us see the way a person with dyslexia does, while sharing scientific evidence to explain the challenges these students have with reading, writing and standardized testing. The film also features interviews with students from elementary school to college; along with notable dyslexics like investment pioneer Charles Schwab, business magnate Richard Branson, high-profile lawyer David Boies and California Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom.
What is your child’s learning style? There are three basic learning styles; visual, tactile, and auditory. Take the test and get immediate results: Is your child a visual learner?
