I love art and kids, so it makes a lot of sense that my business, Young Rembrandts, is all about teaching kids how to do art. In Young Rembrandts, we teach a lot of elementary drawing classes, but I have to say teaching preschool classes is my absolute favorite. I love their enthusiasm and hunger to absorb the world around them – and their skill development is beyond remarkable.

Bringing art to children at an early age has tremendous impact, socially and academically. Look at these ladybug drawings and see what young kids can accomplish with some instruction and encouragement.

Here are three drawings from the same class.  Each ladybug was drawn by a child of a different age and represents a reasonable expectation of what a preschool child in a Young Rembrandts class can complete in 45minutes.

Notice from left to right (youngest to oldest) the progression of control, fine motor skills and coloring detail. The youngest preschool student completed the drawing and did some detailed coloring work. Notice that the older children were able to complete the ladybug scene with more detail, demonstrating even more fine motor control, time on task and colorful detail.

All of these drawings are sweet, and I love seeing the artwork our students do on a weekly basis. I can’t wait to share more of what’s happening in our classrooms with you, so stay tuned!
