I love art and kids, so it makes a lot of sense that my business, Young Rembrandts, is all about teaching kids how to do art. In Young Rembrandts, we teach a lot of elementary drawing classes, but I have to say teaching preschool classes is my absolute favorite.

It had been a very busy day at our house, with a big dinner and lots of activity. Four year old Brayden was full of energy and in need of something constructive to channel that energy into. I suggested he get his markers and paper and do some drawing. He considered it and quickly appeared with markers and paper in hand, asking “what should I draw?”. We talked over just enough ideas to spark his imagination and as you can see, it was a very fruitful evening.
Using lists and charts empowers children to act independently. It also lessens power struggles and discipline issues, while building a child’s confidence and sense of self.
For Mother’s Day I sat with my grandson and together we made a present for mom. Knowing mom loves his art, I taught Brayden how to draw a pot of flowers. After drawing we talked about colors and coloring until ‘all the white parts of the paper were covered’. Four-year-old Brayden sat still, used his fine motor skills, was quiet, intentional and focused for at least forty minutes. His satisfaction and finished drawing was a reminder of how much impact forty minutes of focused activity means to a developing preschooler.

Brayden has the distinct advantage of having drawing classes at home. As the founder of Young Rembrandts, I’ve taught thousands of preschool kids how to draw, but always enjoy special time with my grandson.
One of my all time favorite things to do is to head into a classroom full of preschool students, sit them around a table and teach them how to draw. That would strike terror into the hearts of most people, but with training and a reasonable expectation of what is possible – it is a most remarkable experience.
