Matt’s Success with Motion Graphics

Last night I saw my son working on a project for his Motion Graphics class. He is a college student now, studying for a degree in Digital Film and Video Production.kinetic type image Tonight as I looked over his shoulder at his computer screen, I saw a vibrant red rectangle, with golden words moving in and out of position, all to the sound of Morgan Freeman’s voice.

The colorful words and movement were part of a Kinetic Type Project he was working on for class. The words he used were from the movie ‘Shawshank Redemption’.

Brandon’s Story: Living with Dyslexia

I was talking to a friend about the HBO movie, Rethinking Dyslexia that aired recently. We had both been very impressed by the movie. I’ve researched and written about dyslexia in relation to being a visual learner, but my friend has first hand experience with a son who is dyslexic. As we talked about Brandon and his learning experiences, I was enormously impressed by the success he’s found in his career because of his perseverance and the ways he learned to make things more visual for himself.

The Mind Research Institute: Teaching Math Without Words

This morning I was looking on line to see what kind of things are being done in elementary schools, to teach math visually and came across this video; Teaching Math Without Words: A Visual Approach to Learning Math Through Software.

In the video Dr. Matthew Peterson shares some great insights on why the current language heavy approach to teaching math is not working, especially for children that learn visually and conceptually. In answer to these challenges, their group, The Mind Research Institute has developed math-learning software to use in the classroom and is yielding impressive results. This video includes examples of their software – which I must admit – move way too fast for me to fully grasp. But when seeing the children working and discussing, in front of their computers, the programs seem to move at a pace that invites engagement and understanding.

Handwriting and Children: Practice Makes Perfect

Today, much to our daughter’s delight, our grandson displayed an outpouring of all the ways he’s been learning to write. Brayden attends a great preschool and has been consistently exposed to letters, numbers and opportunities to write. Being a kinesthetic, active little boy he does write but often prefers more physical, social activity. Yet, today was a special day. Brayden sat and wrote and wrote and wrote his name! With much delight and pride in what he was doing, he wrote all the letters in the correct order again and again.

Learning Styles: Julia Child Thrived as Visual Learner

Julia is a Visual, Kinesthetic LearnerI recently took a mini-vacation with my oldest daughter. We spent a few days together in sunny Montauk, NY, enjoying the beach and delighting in the spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean.
