If you have a visual learner, a summer reading program may scare you and your child.
But reading is an essential skill and you’ll both have to bite the bullet and do it. Never fear – there’s a light at the end of the tunnel…. your local library. They know how to make reading fun for your child, so it’s easy on you.
Our local library, like so many others around the country, has a variety of special reading events throughout the summer to keep kids reading. This year our library’s summer theme, Paws to Read, is built around Clifford the Big Red Dog. In an effort to get kids into the library they have a variety of interactive exhibits, game days and special events all centered on Clifford.

Defeating the summer slide can be accomplished in a lot of different ways. One of my personal favorites is the summer reading program that is held annually at our local library, Gail Borden. 
Like most local libraries, the summertime offers a lot of opportunities to engage with kids from the community and build a love of learning (especially reading)!
It was the first rainy afternoon of summer vacation, so what to do with a couple of six year olds? We pulled out the paper and pencils, found the Young Rembrandts How to Draw videos 
on YouTube and spent a lovely afternoon drawing.
If you haven’t already tried this, give it a shot… I keep filming and uploading new videos and there are even a few books you can download with tons of drawing tutorials to keep them busier, longer.
If your kids are at home all day every day, summer can get dull- and fast. But I have something to help everyone out… evict boredom from your lives with just one easy activity. 
It’s easy for kids to do on their own at home, on the road, with a friend, with a group of friends and it’s something they will want to do again and again.

Summer Vacation has finally arrived and while we all deserve a break from hectic schedules and homework, we need to keep our kids active. A lot can happen over summer to help build a child’s mind – but left unattended, a great deal of what’s been learned last year can be lost. 
Summer is the perfect time to experiment with different kinds of learning for different learning styles; all while keeping it light and having fun.
Family Book Contest- summer reading lists can often feel impossible to get through, but organize a family book contest to encourage participation and excitement! 
A visual star chart, tracking each members progress is a great reminder for everyone involved, and don’t forget a prize for the winner(s)!!
Redecorate the Yard- redecorating the house can be an expensive undertaking with a lot of planning involved, but redecorating the yard can be done in a few short hours. Dig up holiday lights to string across the patio, plant flowers or vegetables in small pots or “paint” the sidewalk with washable chalk. Celebrate the hard work with a special outdoor dinner or picnic and bask in the mental (and physical) exercise done by all.
