Memorial Day has been around since the late 1800’s as a day to honor the brave soldiers of the Civil War. In 1950, Congress requested that the President  call on Americans to observe each Memorial Day as a day of prayer for permanent peace Memorial Day is now observed on the last Monday of May. It is an occasion to honor the men and women who died in all wars. Teaching our children that their freedom came at an extremely high price is essential. I have gathered a few child-friendly activities to do as a family to help get this important message across. 

1. If you know a veteran, call them and let them know you appreciate them.
2. Take the kids to a parade.
3. Make some baked goods and take them to a retirement home. There are a lot of veterans there.

8. Honor the National Moment of Remembrance. In 2000, Congress addressed the fact that many Americans simply use Memorial Day as a day to eat burgers. They created the National Moment to make sure our troops are honored. At 3 p.m. on Memorial Day, every American is asked to pause for just one minute to honor the fallen.
9. Draw a soldier with this How to Draw video.
10. Share a photo of your beloved fallen soldier/airman/etc. on Facebook or Instagram. It’s a day about remembering after all, so share his (or her) story!
