Summer is Here! Now what…?
Summer Vacation has finally arrived and while we all deserve a break from hectic schedules and homework, we need to keep our kids active. A lot can happen over summer to help build a child’s mind – but left unattended, a great deal of what’s been learned last year can be lost. Summer is the perfect time to experiment with different kinds of learning for different learning styles; all while keeping it light and having fun.
These are my favorite 3 ways to keep kids learning this summer – between vacations and trips to the pool.
- Structure and Schedules – The lazy days of summer are great, but kids still need structure and a predictable schedule. For example, start the morning making beds, brushing teeth, getting dressed and eating breakfast, which could lead to some cooking adventures or time spent reading. Structure the afternoons with plenty of time for creative play, time at the pool and time spent with friends. Keeping a (softer) schedule during the summer will make back to school much easier- for everyone.
- Read and Listen – Reading skills are key to classroom success and summer is the perfect time to take a break from textbooks and read something fun! Make it enjoyable. Join the reading program at your local library, choose books that appeal to your child’s interests or watch movies based on favorite books. Audio books are also great for your reader that is tired of reading… Listening to books can reinvigorate the brain, build stronger vocabulary and increase comprehension skills.
- Draw it and Make it – The arts are important to a child’s development and summer means more time for structured and unstructured creative time. Enroll your child in art, dance or theater camps. Stock the house with fresh art and drawing supplies. Take a family trip to the art museum, attend music in the park and theater performances.
Summer offers so many opportunities to try new things, continue education, explore and play with friends and family. Have a fun!!
