Along with being an author and speaker, I have a ‘side job’ as the CEO of Young Rembrandts Franchise, an art enrichment program for kids 3 to 12years old. After teaching thousands of children how to draw in the Chicago suburbs, we became a franchise company eleven years ago. Now, there are Program Directors across the country and internationally, that hires and train remarkable individuals to teach art to children, using the Young Rembrandts method.
Imagine my excitement when Education.com asked me to share insight from my book, Being Visual. What an honor! If your child is a visual learner, they may be struggling in the classroom. Understanding learning styles is a fantastic way to help a child succeed academically. We parents don’t like to settle for anything less then success for our kids and I’m excited to have the opportunity to help.

All I wanted was to do art with kids — to teach and empower — to see their sweet faces light up with every new discovery. My young students thrived when they got the “how to” information they craved. And while teaching children how to draw, they taught me — again and again — how important art is to them. In my book, Being Visual, I talk about my 20 years experience teaching young kids how to draw by using their preferred learning style. The classes and teaching method were popular and effective, so I made a business out of it. But it’s never really been about the business.
I love art, I especially love kids art. That’s why March is one of my favorite months. Youth Art Month celebrates art education in the United States. It is observed in March, with thousands of American schools participating, often with the involvement of local art museums and civic organizations. I was honored to have been scheduled to speak that the Menomonee Falls Public Library on March 5th but unfortunately a snow storm was approaching the area. Cancellation preparations had been in swing but the event went as planned the next day. I am so thankful for technology and my ability to appear in spite of being snowed in miles away.
I love the way visual kids express themselves, learn problem solving, see multiple solutions to problems – and the impact the arts have on developing minds. Meet Terra. She makes me want to be 16 again.
Terra is the head of the Menomonee Falls High School art department and I want to be a student in her classes. Recently I had a tour of the art classrooms, saw student work and enjoyed Terra’s classroom stories and favorite assignments.
This is one of my favorite speakers, Kenneth Robinson. He’s an author, educator, and creativity expert, he speaks internationally, challenging us to rethink our school systems, cultivate creativity and protect the arts.
