Recently, science and education experts alike have started touting the benefits of doodling and drawing as a means to convey ideas in a more holistic manner. Here are a few of the best reasons to work doodling back into your daily practice right now.
Right brain creative kids and adults are enormously valuable thinkers, with boundless gifts and abilities, but are highly misunderstood, undervalued and often made to feel like we are less than.To increase understanding on who we are as thinkers and students, I’m doing a 6-month series on what it means to be a right brain thinker.

Not all children learn the same way. Our left-brain dominant kids are comfortable in the world of language. Our right-brain dominant kids thrive in the world of images. For these students, no seeing means no thinking. No thinking means no learning. Visual art training helps them develop the visual skills that are essential to their learning.
One of my favorite self-care ideas is coloring! There is just something about the simplicity of a new coloring book and the smell and excitement of a new box of colored pencils that calms and resets my mind. And the great thing about coloring is that it can be done almost anywhere whether you have 5 minutes or 5 hours to devote to it.
While technology and culture are goading them to work faster and more intensely, tasks such as writing can help right brain thinkers find a healthy balance in their learning and play.
Distance learning has made it abundantly clear that writing is a struggle for our right-brain dominant kids. They are always so busy thinking and have so many ideas, when it comes time to write they’re overwhelmed by possibilities.
I’m so proud of my grandson Brayden for being named Student of the Month! He’s in seventh grade, doing distance learning and eight different classes to keep track of. Be encouraged, our right brain kids can thrive!!
While the schools did their best to make a switch from classroom to online learning, let’s be honest, our kids’ summer vacation, as far as school is concerned, started a little earlier this year. Unfortunately, if summer days continue to be devoid of educational pursuits– a significant amount of what went into building your child’s brain during the school year will start to leak out.
