Creativity is an internal process that requires time spent in imagination. But today’s world is busy; so many things demand our time, attention and energy generating original ideas can sometimes feel more like work than play.

Thinking creatively is an internal process. It’s about finding and connecting thoughts to arrive at new conclusions and new ideas. This kind of thinking comes naturally to the right side of our mind, but we need to slow down and “tune in” to hear it. We can all be creative, but we have to get quiet enough to hear ourselves think.

To get your creative juices flowing, engage in activities that keep your hands moving but allow your mind to roam, explore, examine, even disconnect; without interruption. This can be playing music, doing art, woodworking or even taking a hike. Albert Einstein employed this style of creative thinking. After some time spent working, he would set his thoughts aside and go sailing or play his violin, allowing his mind to sift, sort and ponder; leading to remarkable scientific discoveries.

Times of quiet and solitude free us and feed us. Be sure to schedule time to unplug and tune out because as Picasso said – “Without great solitude, no serious work is possible.”
