When my girls were young, there were times I felt like a human coloring book. All three of them enjoyed a healthy balance of art, athletics and creative play. Their creative play days consisted of lots of dress up, imagining and drawing. 
A favorite coloring and drawing subject were princesses, which often led to me providing the drawings they wanted to color.
Like most young girls, they could imagine the perfect dress, fancy hairdos and flashy jewelry – but when it came time to draw, they were intimidated by drawing faces and figures. That’s when I came to the rescue and provided help with their drawings and special requests.

We recently surveyed some of our young artists; the girls were most interested in princesses and fancy dresses. My favorite request was from 5 year old Delany who wanted to draw “princesses, dresses, dogs, castles, girls and babies”. There are no dogs or babies in this book of drawing videos, but there are plenty of princesses, tiaras, jewelry and even a castle.

News stories about Common Core, the new federal standards for schools, are on the rise as schools gear up for spring testing. While I have long been opposed to standardized testing, like many others, I was hopeful improvements in education were on the horizon. Sadly, the more I read about Common Core, the more concerned I am for our children. 
However I was recently reminded of the power of passionate informed parents when I read about two moms, Heather and Erin, that changed the course of education in Indiana: 2 Moms vs the Common Core: How an Eight Year Old’s Homework Assignment Led to Political Upheaval.

Last night, my son was in his room working on a project for a college class.
As I said good night to him, I got a peak at what he was working on and was very impressed. As I admired his work I thought about how my active son, that had resisted sitting still for hours of homework as a young child, had grown into a young man, willing to spend hours and hours on visual projects that engaged him.

Not Really. I’m not even sure what a gamer is. But I do know he found a few games on his IPad this holiday season that have captured his attention and and sparked some interesting conversations. 
First let me say, Bill and I own plenty of technology and don’t really understand or know how to use most of it. We have smart phones, IPads, IPods, laptops, and fancy things on our television but barely tap into the depth of their capability. I’m sure the computer in my car could get us to the moon – and back – but I’m still surprised when my car channels the voice of the person on the other end of my phone call. And just who is Siri?
